“My current work allows me to share the dreamlike mountain and lake forms that give me such calm - receding and creating space for the embedded components. Ethereal watercolour paintings are evocative of the tiny bits of colour and detail scattered amongst the vast landscape. Tree sketches and figures are placed to give a sense of the scale of the feeling, the grandeur of place.”
In 2002, after leaving the senior corporate role, McNenly enrolled in the Alberta University of the Arts and decided to formally pursue what had been her passion and true love throughout her corporate career. In this first phase, she studied metal sculpture, fabrication and design. Later she would travel extensively across the United States enrolling in private classes and workshops to glean whatever she thought necessary to contribute to the various components of her layered and complex artwork.
The result of her single-minded pursuit are unique, deceptively simple works that read as elegant paintings and invite the viewer to come close and engage intimately with the details, coming home to places they’ve never been before.
McNenly is a self-taught contemporary encaustic painter who creates minimalist artwork. As a metalsmith she combines gold and silver fabricated components into her pieces, contrasting hard edged details with ethereal wax planes. She captures the expansive feeling of the Canadian landscape with two dimensional assemblages of watercolour paintings and precious metals set in an encaustic wax base.
Clients have fallen in love with these meticulously created minimalist, intimate pieces across Canada, the US and Germany.
