"My work is a reflection of my interest in the congruity between presence and space, and the ways in which our perception of these elements can be manipulated.”
Inspired by the phenomena emanating from his sculptural works, Swartz's art is a dedicated pursuit of evoking emotions such as meditativeness, tranquility, and peace. Meticulously crafted, his pieces are intentionally designed to challenge and expand the viewer's understanding of space and presence.
Swartz experiments with back painted tinted plexiglass as a medium for his paintings. These creations feature abstracted linear geometric forms and deep vibrant tones to create pieces that are both skillfully made and visually striking. The back-painted tinted plexiglass introduces an element of selective surface clarity, inviting viewers to explore windows and apertures that reveal internal elements, dynamically concealed and revealed with shifts in perspective.

Central to Swartz's artistic practice is the creation of minimalistic masterpieces that defy the conventional boundaries between two and three-dimensional painting. Through an ingenious technique involving the suspension of sculptural forms within hand-cast acrylic glass, Swartz produces multi-faceted works that captivate viewers by reshaping their perception of space and presence.
Courtland Swartz lives and works in Toronto, Canada. After attending Toronto’s Academy of Realist Art from 2010 -2012, he pursued a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University and graduated in 2015.
