In a career primarily focused on mixed media and abstract painting, she has recently launched a new series of wall sculptures that borrow from the shapes and forms of her two-dimensional paintings. As a contemporary artist, Laurie has transitioned from a flat surface where she incorporates and manipulates various media to the distillation of her artwork into simpler forms and the isolation of colour and shapes.

The solidity of the wood and the cast glow of light feels like an alchemy that's almost spiritual. I get to experiment with colour combinations in a simplified, direct way that feels like a distillation from my more intricate abstract paintings. I kind of feel like this distillation has happened in many areas of my life... asking the question - what really matters?

Paintings

Laurie’s process is very intuitive, at times incorporating layers of stencils, using oil and cold wax. She often works on several pieces at the same time simultaneously creating order and chaos, adding and removing paint until beauty emerges in a finished piece.
