Chamnan Chongpaiboon is a Thai painter who merges pointillism and Aboriginal dotting technique to create striking pieces in his own unique style. With almost 15 years of practice, he has mastered pointillism. To the naked eye his dots are evenly spaced, blending seamlessly. His use of monochromatic colours create subtle texture and become increasingly hypnotic on closer viewing.
For Chongpaiboon, his paintings are visual stories – each dot is a letter, a continuous stream of dots come together to as circles representing words, rings of circles merge to tell a story.
As a Buddhist, he believes in the notion of a “Wheel of Dhamma” which represents completeness, peace, and eternity. His approach is in reference to ritualistic Buddhist Mandala circle and a meditative state of mind. It’s not hard to imagine how meditative it must be for the artist to painstakingly apply hundreds, thousands of perfectly circular dots with acrylic paint, equally spaced, creating concentric circles on the canvas.
While Chongpaiboon uses a more traditional approach to painting, he creates very contemporary work – graphic, bold, stylized, seemingly pop art. Often using only a few colours in each piece, his paintings are impressively striking, deceptively simple portraits of women.
Chamnan Chongpaiboon received B.F.A. Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in Thailand. His work is well-received across Asia and beyond including major cities such as New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore.
