“In my paintings, I would like to capture the feeling of joy that comes from being immersed in nature. I want the viewer to feel that they’ve arrived in the country. I intend for them to smell the earth, to feel what it’s like being on the land.”
After graduating with a Fine Arts degree, Kate Taylor did not pursue art immediately. It seemed then that angst was a prerequisite for becoming a full-time artist, she instead, started a corporate career in marketing and communications where her creativity still had an outlet.
Coming from a family with artistic pedigree, she thought it inevitable that she would return to her roots. Walking away from the corporate world in 2008, she has been painting abstract landscapes since, exhibiting locally and internationally, winning awards and people’s hearts.
Kate paints from a place of joy. Her process involves absorbing the sensory experiences in nature, and painting from memory to transmit joy. From the effects of staining birch panels to the vibration of contrasting jewel tones, Kate’s paintings evoke both emotion and mystery. They transmit a free-flow of joyous, energetic, and at the same time tranquil emotions. Her artistic choices convey simplicity and gentle movement, teardrop shapes and cascading lines seem to dangle, scatter, and ripple.
Having established her studio in the country she fully lives through the seasons and the cycle of life – embracing the harsh Canadian winters, watching the rebirth of spring, breathing the fresh summer air and watching the trees shed their leaves in the fall. Her collection of paintings come to life as she observes her surroundings and nature’s resilience.
Kate has exhibited widely in Canada and Toronto and internationally. Her sought-after work has been recognized on different occasions as Best in Show and the People’s Choice.
