“It is often just the simple form that can have a great impact.”
Gordon Hopkins animates still life with colour and scale to create art that is instantly recognizable. His large work finds its strength in his unique technique and use of strong, vibrant colours. He often sets the outline of everyday objects over layers of colour, building up the material using oil bar and paint on linen canvas or wood panels. Patterns, forms, fish, fruit, gardens and landscapes are some of the many subjects in his work.
Hopkins is unapologetic with his use of bold colors and the scale with which he represents ordinary, everyday objects. This accentuation or exaggeration of familiar objects transports us to an imaginary world where outlines, shape and colour combine to create depth and movement. His work emphasizes the beauty that can be found in the ordinary, the mundane and our natural surroundings. His work has a sense of exploration, an interpretation of our surroundings from his point of view, filled with colour and a sense of joy.
Inspired by a creative family, Hopkins pursued art. Currently living and working in Belgium, his travel around Europe nurtures his practice both as the muse for his work and the locale for his successful career.
His work is widely collected internationally.
