Featured Artist - CARL KARNI BAIN
Carl Karni Bain’s (BAI) art is an ever-evolving exploration of his early fixation with the African mask. The mask, as a symbol that speaks deeply to him has been the vehicle of his artistic expression and, he is certain it will be an on-going inspiration.
By using the mask in states of semi-abstraction, BAI's portraits and nudes may appear stoic, but they powerfully communicate a sense of mystery and passion, while awakening a curious impulse in the viewer.
Early exploration of and dedication to understanding the masters and encouragement and support from art instructors while pursuing classical drawing at the California College of Arts and Craft have all fueled an art career.
“I'm an abstract expressionist with a background in classical drawing. I use bold colours and linear lines to create dynamic portraits and nudes.”
For the past three decades Carl Karni-Bain has been exhibiting across the United States especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, North Carolina and New York. His work has been commissioned by authors, playwrights and corporations and has been featured on the CBS Series Limitless, and the hit series Star, on FOX.
“The foundation for my portraits comes from the African Mask. As a child, I remember the visual impact it had on me and it remains strong in my retainable memory to this day.”
His work has been presented in over 20 international art fairs with the Spence Gallery. In 2013 the Director of The Studio Museum in Harlem, identified him as one of the top ten artists in Harlem. BAI's work is included in the permanent collection of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte and the Harrison Museum of African American Culture. He currently lives and practices art in Harlem, New York.
